RE: Towing 6800# with an F150? Should I go 3/4 ton instead?

It looks as though the SD trucks got some upgrades in 2005 (elec brake controller!) and was just re-done for 08. I might be happy with a loaded up 05/06 Lariat, have to think about it:) Used F250/2500 trucks in the 05/06 years are also going for a song right now with low miles, probably never worked or used for towing, people just fell over themselves trading them in on eco boxes this past year. Really, they are almost giving the trucks away.

RE: star craft TT

It would seem Jayco is StarCraft. Always thought they were separate but it would seem the rumours that Jayco owned a very controlling stake in them was correct. Wonder why Jayco can't make rigs as good as StarCraft then?

RE: Towing 6800# with an F150? Should I go 3/4 ton instead?

Get the f250 with a diesel. It is no fun listening to the f150 with the 5.4 screaming up every little incline you come across never mind a big hill or mountain pass. The 5.4L doesn't scream and if you've been in a new one lately you'd notice how excellent a job Ford has done insulating the interior for noise. BTW took mine to Florida last year and had no issues and in fact passed more than a few overloaded diesels pulling 5er's through the Virginia's. Jeeze you'd think they made this truck from a Mecano set the way some of you guys talk about it:h Like said I'd pull up to 7000lbs with it but after that it would make way more sense to go to a F250/2500 truck with V10 or diesel.

RE: Towing 6800# with an F150? Should I go 3/4 ton instead?

The last time I took my KZ over the scales she came in around 6600lbs on the axles and I have had NO problems, hill or no hills towing around Ontario or NY State. Much more than this and you'll be exceeding the GCVWR or her though once you figure in the tongue weight. Trust me on that one :W She gets decent towing mileage pulling a consistent hand measured 10mpg and I can get close to a steady 18mpg on the highway doing 55mph/90kph empty. Trucks specs are in my sig line.

RE: Plant Closing

Here's the article. Jayco Closure I was not aware how closely the two were tied together. It would seem Jayco is really StarCraft and not two separate companies.

RE: Nothing But Bargain Basement Priced Used H-2 Hummers

If it had been 2 small cars, the occupants probly would have been crushed inside the cars, probly losing their legs or worse. Crash comparison testing says otherwise. Both these vehicles hit the same wall at the same speed. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v213/CF105/mini_vs_f150.jpg?t=1226532271 Incase you didn't know or didn't want to tell that truck is a 1997 F150 SC. Just so there is no confusion that it is not a GM 1500. Although had the Heritage and the mini collided head on this picture would not look like this at all. Pretty sure they were not selling Mini's in 1997. Most every vehicle is improved in the last decade. Let's see a car and truck of the same year. Never mind that we'll just do a head to head of a new Mini and my 10 year old Heritage F150 and we'll see who'd knees are tucked up under their chin :E since I don't often have an opportunity to drive head on into a large piece of concrete at 60mph.

RE: Starcraft Aqualon Problems?

You don't say if your using Popupgizmos so if your not I'd look into getting a set to help along with any issues regarding interior moisture. I had two StarCraft Antigua HTT's with Aqualon tenting and we camped in everything from pouring rain to snow and never had any issue with the tenting at all. IMHO the best tenting material made for popups and HTT's bar none.

RE: Party canopy as a winter storage cover

We had Antigua's for three years and I never did anything but angle them for drainage and winterize them. Gave them a good cleaning a waxing and that was it. No issues. Wouldn't worry about it to much really they are built to handle the snow loads.

RE: Bunk ends and Concrete blocks..

The corner jacks are made to stabilize NOT support/level the camper that's why on most units they are optional equipment. You WILL compromise the frame and camper walls holding it up this way. What is wrong with using the wheels, stabilzers and tongue jack to support the rig just like it was meant to? These are LITE weight units, their frames are not meant to hold the weight of the unit except over the axles.

RE: Bunk ends and Concrete blocks..

Spray on coleman canvas water repellent on the canvas, and make sure when open to secure the tie downs its possiable you got some wind blown water at the ends.Condensation is also a problem even when closed because of the change in tempertures, try to leave a little opening in the vent area to help with that jerry Don't ROO's come with Sunbrela tenting material? This should not need water repellent at all except for the weeping from the seams. Unless there are holes the only thing it can be is excess condensation inside or seam weeping both of which can be cured. The seams will swell and ventilation/bunk fans/electric heaters will fix the moisture problem. Just remember no matter what you do there is almost always going to be some moisture around the matresses just because of where they are next to the tenting.

RE: Bunk ends and Concrete blocks..

We just bought 2003 Jayco Kiwi 23D on Saturday. We have a winter site starting November first (can't wait!) and we were wondering if we could put the trailer up on concrete blocks? It rained all day Saturday, and bunk ends were soaked, which in turn soaked the mattresses. There are no holes or anything like that, it just went through. Are there any suggestions on how to seal the bunk ends better? We already put Canvac on the zipper down part of the windows on the bunks. We have pop up gizmos and reflectix on the windows. HTT's frames are not strong enough to put up on blocks. You stand a good chance of possibly warping the frame and then the body. Just leave it on the wheels with the stabs down, shouldn't harm anything for the winter. Re the soaking of you mattress, it leaked somewhere. I had it rain all weekend on my Antigua's from time to time and outside of condensation water did not come from the outside in.

If you come to Ontario bring 100' for the Provincial Parks. No I'm not kidding! Hey most times I can't see my neighbours so it's not all bad!

RE: WHAT CAN I TOW?????

OK NEXT QUESTION CUZ THIS IS PROBABLY GONNA RUIN EVERYTHING.... IF MY HITCH SAYS 5K AND MY TOW CAP IS 6500. WHATS THE TRUTH? :h Turn the cap lock off. The 5Klb on the hitch is for dropping the trailer right onto the ball without WDH usually. With a WDH such as an Equalizer it may be rated to 10 - 12Klbs. Check the manual to make sure. Technically I can tow 5Klbs right off my bumper, YMMV though.

RE: Tent Ends or Hard SIde Bunk??

We really enjoyed our Antigua HTT's. They were excellent in all weather including winter camping and the sometimes very hot and humid weather we get in Ontario over the summer. The StarCrafts use Aqualon tenting material which for all intent purposes is practically immune to mold and mildew and can be even washed with bleach. A total non issue. It was also very supple in all weather including down to -16C which if you don't know is COLD! Leaking was also a non issue, again old wives tales and besides look around here and see how many hardside units leak. LOTS! With a HTT there is more setup but you are greeted by an extremely large and open interior while towing a very compact package that has all the interior features of a TT. We're now into a KZ with a rear hardslide with front bunkhouse mostly due to DW now having some back issues and the fact our StarCraft did not have insulated and heated tanks for winter camping. The KZ is a great unit but not near as big as our Antigua 235SBS was inside as well as the bigger sleeping areas for the kids/guests. Security? I can open any camper built in North America with a screw driver. Locks are to keep honest people honest.

RE: GM asking us to void warranty on chipped trucks.

Mag Moss means diddly to me as I don't live in the US. We are covered by a very simular piece of legislation from about the same time for the same reason. Guess what it's based on?

RE: GM asking us to void warranty on chipped trucks.

My Ford dealer told me in no uncertain terms "chip it and we'll void the powertrain warranty". Pretty simple, to the point and seriously do I have the money av to fight them on this? No. Burden of proof would be on me to prove otherwise. I know it only has 300hp and 365ft/lbs of tq but it's enough for me.

RE: 2009 F-150 evaluation

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, it is amazing the things they say about the automatic. "doesn't up shift when you don't want it to" "down shifts when you want it to" It's like, with another 20 or 30 years of development, they will have an auto that works as well as a manual. Could not agree more, where is the six speed manual transmission??? It's in the Super Duty's and who know's for how much longer. I have an MDO5 5sp manual in my '98 Heritage F150 with a 4.6L but for backing into tight places I'll take the auto in my '07. Nobody wants a manual gear box in a 1500 series truck anymore. BTW there is nothing wrong durability wise with the 4sp auto in the present truck, it's just that it's missing an extra OD gear and a closer ratio 4sp. For pulling 7klbs I've not had any issue with it but the 6sp would be nice.
